History of Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, Monticello, and Holy Cross

As early as 1880, Paul Lippert began arranging funerals, attending to the deceased, and producing finished caskets in the back of his furniture store (Lippert Building on 1st Ave in Dyersville). For nearly 20 years, Paul carried out family wishes.

Paul’s son, Henry “Local” Lippert worked with his father and carried on the family practice after Paul’s death in 1905. In 1928, Henry bought the home Judge James Dyer’s daughter, Anna and Joseph Limback, and remodeled it as a “Home of Funerals”. This location continued to serve the public until the end of 2013.

Henry had one daughter, Lanette J. Lippert, who married L.F. “Gene” Kramer and the Kramer name entered funeral care. Gene earned his degree in mortuary science and continued funeral service in the Dyersville area with Lanette assisting.

Gene and Lanette had four children, two of whom entered funeral service. Karol, the eldest, who spent a number of years with the funeral home until relocating to Cedar Rapids. Dave became a funeral director in 1962 and assisted in the family business, becoming the fourth generation Owner of Kramer Funeral Home following Gene’s death in 1971.

Dave’s son, Craig Kramer, earned his degree in mortuary science in 1990 and became the fifth generation Owner of Kramer Funeral Home in 2000. Craig and Dave expanded to the Holy Cross location, purchased and renovated for funeral service in 1994, and the Monticello location, built in 1997.

Brock Morris, who began working at Kramer Funeral Home in 2018, became the owner of Kramer Funeral Home in 2025 alongside his wife, Darris Morris. Brock received a degree in business from Central College in 2017 and mortuary science from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 2018.
