GARNAVILLO, IOWA
Roger William Kuehl, age 89, of Garnavillo, passed away peacefully at Guttenberg Care Center on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
Roger was born on March 1, 1937, in Elkader, Iowa, the son of Edward V. and Phyllis (Wikan) Kuehl
Roger graduated from Central High School in Elkader with the class of 1955. Roger entered the United States Army and served from 1959 to 1961. He graduated from NCO Academy and served again in the Active Reserves and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sargent, E6. In 1960, he also earned one year of college credits in the military.
On December 2, 1961, Roger was united in marriage to Elizabeth Jean (Betty) Forst at St. John’s Catholic Church in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. This union was blessed with three children. Roger converted to Catholicism while in the service. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garnavillo.
He worked as foreman at Wilson & Co. in Cedar Rapids. He also worked as territory manager for Luverne Truck Equipment in Luverne, Minnesota. Together, Roger and Betty purchased a farm in Wisconsin and later the home farm West of Elkader. Roger later worked as salesman at Huinker Chevrolet in Monona, Iowa.
Roger enjoyed farming, fishing, Terry Redlin puzzles, reading history, and spending time with family. Roger and Betty enjoyed the many Texas Tenors and Andre Rieu concerts they attended. When visiting with Roger, you were always in store for good conversation. He knew so much about history, science, and many other topics of interest.
Roger is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth; children: Lora (Alan) Glenn of Elkader, Lisa (Art) Scherf of Strawberry Point, Darrin (Candace) Kuehl of Denver, CO; grandchildren: Joshua Glenn, Kristina Glenn, James (May) Glenn, Rachel (Jason) Huber, Ryan (Morgan) Berns, Gretchen (fiance, Marshal Rosenbaum) Hanson, Amanda (special friend, Isaac Sauer) Hanson; great-grandchildren: Jayden, Reagan, Lilly, Miles, Hanalei, Katana, Oakland, and Maelyn; siblings: Edward Kuehl, Marjorie Kuehl, Edyth Kuehl; sisters-in-law: Joyce Kuehl, Alma Bockenstedt, Carol Becwar; brothers-in-law: John Forst, and Edward Linder; and several extended relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Phyllis Kuehl; parents-in-law, Vencil and Mildred Forst; sisters: Barbara Amundson, Mary Tabery, Maxine Branson; brothers: Marvin Kuehl, George Kuehl; sisters-in-law, Audrey Kuehl, Jeanette Nolte, Mary Linder, Theresa Marso; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Amundson, Al Tabery, Harmon Nolte, Dale Marso, Henry Bockenstedt, and Dale Becwar.
The family would like to thank the staff at Guttenberg Hospital, St. Croix Hospice, and Guttenberg Care Center.
Visitation will be held from 9 – 11 a.m., Monday, May 4, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garnavillo. Funeral Mass will commence at 11 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo with burial to follow in the church cemetery where military honors will be accorded. Rev. Paul Kwaku-Ameyaw will officiate with Deacon Jim Pfaffly assisting.
