COLESBURG, IOWA
Robert (Bob) J. Wessel, 84, of Colesburg, Iowa passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Unity Point/St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as a result of complications from surgery.
Visitation will be held from 8:30 – 11:15 a.m. on Monday, April 28, 2025, at St. Patrick Parish Center in Colesburg, prior to Funeral Services which will be held at 11:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colesburg. Rev. John Haugen will officiate. Private family burial will follow.
Bob was born July 3, 1940, in Greeley, Iowa, son of Burdette and Lucile (Hilsenbeck) Wessel. He served in the military for 3 years. Bob married Julia Nachtman on May 11, 1968 in Earlville, Iowa. Together they farmed north of Colesburg for 60 years. He also worked as a welder at John Deere for over 30 years. Following retirement from John Deere, Bob continued to work in various jobs until his passing. Bob was a faith filled man who cherished his family. He was kindhearted with a gentle smile who was willing to help anyone in need. He also enjoyed fishing, listening to polka music and farming. In addition, Bob was a proud veteran and an active member of the Colesburg Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Julia; children: Christina Carter of Story City, Thomas (Amy) Wessel of Edgewood, Deanne (Scott) Hermsen of Dyersville, John (Kara) Wessel of Colesburg, Jennifer (Eric) Cherne of Colesburg; grandchildren: Ryan and Michael Carter, Natalie, Avery and Samantha Wessel, Jacob and Joseph Hermsen, Justin, Elizabeth (Alex Welch) and Luke Wessel, Mariah and Lauren Cherne; siblings: Edward (Elaine) Wessel, Diane (Patrick) Gannon, Marla Fett, Esther Fitzpatrick, Calvin (Vicki) Wessel, David (Joyce) Wessel; in-laws: Francis Nachtman, Rita Nachtman, Betty (Gene) Kruse, Charlotte Nachtman and Leo Roling.
He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law: Cletus and Elizabeth Nachtman; in-laws: Mary Murray, John Nachtman, Dorothy Roling, Robert Murray, and Wallace Fett.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Colesburg Legion.
