Phyllis "Peg" L. Bangs

GARNAVILLO, IOWA

Phyllis “Peg” LaRayne (Welsh) Bangs, 90, of Guttenberg, Iowa, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026, at MercyOne Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 4 PM to 6 PM at Morris Funeral Home in Garnavillo, and will continue Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 9:30 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Garnavillo. Funeral service will begin at 10:30 AM on Thursday, August 13, 2026, with an inurnment to follow at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Peg was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on July 14, 1936, to Wesley and Maude (Monroe) Welsh. She attended Graham and Millville Country School through eighth grade. In 1954, she graduated from Guttenberg High School. She married Louis Moser in 1955 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, Iowa. Together, they had two beloved children, Jeffrey Harold and Barbara Ann. After Louis’s death in October 1966, Peg moved to Guttenberg, where she worked as the secretary at Guttenberg High School. She met Dick Bangs, who was a teacher and the girls’ basketball coach at Garnavillo High School. They married on August 3, 1968, and Peg moved to Garnavillo, where she worked as the secretary at Garnavillo Elementary School. Together, they had one beloved child, Tracy Lynn. Later, Peg worked at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office until her retirement in January 1999. Dick passed away in September 2004, and Peg continued to live in Guttenberg.

Peg enjoyed playing bingo and cards, going to the casino, going out to eat with her friends, watching women’s basketball—especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and Indiana Fever—and traveling. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Garnavillo.

Peg is survived by her children: Jeffrey H. (Cindy) Moser of Bartelsville, OK, Barbara A. (Jeff) Patten of Tulsa, OK, and Tracy L. (RoseAnn) Kjar of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren: Brian (Laura) Moser, Trevor (Mackenzie) Moser, Gregory (Abdi) Patten, and Phillip Patten; step granddaughter, Ashley Patten; great grandchildren: Emery Moser, Tatum Moser, Sutton Moser, Lilyana Patten, and Leo Patten; and step great granddaughter, Camila Hargrave.

Peg was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Maude; and siblings: Vanita (Welsh) Hines, Gerald “Bob”, Beverly (Welsh) Helm, Leland Welsh, Arletta (Welsh) Hankes, and Bill Welsh.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made out to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Garnavillo or to the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg.
