Marjonell Schmelzer

Marjonell "Marge" Schmelzer, age 85, of Elkader, IA, died Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader, IA. She was born the daughter of Thomas and Anna (Auer) Garaghty on June 5, 1926, in Elkader Iowa. Marge attended and graduated from the St. Joseph Catholic School in Elkader and after school worked for the telephone company in Elkader for awhile. On February 7, 1945, Marge married Ray Troester. Together they were blessed with four children. Ray later passed away on September 2, 1963. Marge found true love again when she married Kenneth Schmelzer on June 19, 1965, at St. Marys Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. They too were blessed with three children. Together with Kenny, Marge spent many years making a home, raising her children and helping out on the farm. In her youth Marge enjoyed playing basketball. In her later years she enjoyed listening to sports and attending her grandchildrens sporting events. She took pride in her illustrious flower garden and was a phenomenal cook which the grandkids took advantage of asking for those special dishes that she was known for. Being on the farm was something that Marge didnt take for granted and cherished all those years that she lived there but spending time with her children and grandchildren brought her the most joy she could ask for and she will be lovingly missed by many. Those left to cherish her memory are her seven children, Dennis (Susan) Troester, Richard (Kay) Troester, Susan Riegel, Judy Manning, Kathy (Todd) Ihde, Jeff and Doug Schmelzer; 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Ray Troester and Kenneth Schmelzer; one sister Mary Joan and two great grandsons, Jared and Jarren.In Lieu of flowers and all types of sympathy memorials may be sent to either, Elkader Hospice or the Elkader or Garnavillo EMTs.Visitation: Friday 4:00 - 7:00 P.M.
