PETERSBURG, IOWA
LaVerne “Bud” Domeyer of Petersburg, IA died Sunday, October 11, 2026, surrounded by family.
Friends may call from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Kramer-Morris Funeral Home in Dyersville, IA. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg, IA, with burial in the church cemetery where military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post #137. Rev. Joshua Krischel will officiate.
Bud was born December 2, 1929, to Andrew and Frances (Von Lehmden) Domeyer. Of the twelve siblings, Bud was proud to say he was “the last of the first half dozen” in birth order. He was lucky enough to meet his future wife at a family wedding. He was joined in marriage with Ellen Hogan on May 7, 1952.
Together they lived in California during Bud’s time with the United States Marines where their oldest son Dave was born. After two years in California, they moved back to Iowa where they settled in Petersburg. Their three other children Carla, Pat, and Mary were born during that time and together they owned and operated Petersburg Appliance & Electric from 1954 until Dave took over the business in 1994. Despite selling the business, Bud continued working until 2015 at the age of 85. Bud was a proud member of the Petersburg community but was also a respected individual throughout all of the surrounding towns. He served on the Farmer Savings Bank Board of Directors, the Beckman Catholic School Board, the Ss. Peter and Paul Parish board and countless other roles supporting the community.
Bud was fortunate enough to travel the world but his favorite place was home with family. The love and dedication he showed to Ellen throughout their marriage until her death from Alzheimer’s is something you usually only see in books and movies. If he could have taken her place so she could live a long and happy life, there is no doubt he would have. Bud loved his four children with everything he had and would do anything for them. It tore Bud up to watch three of his four children pass before him but he carried that heartache with grace while continuing to show up for his family.
Bud and Ellen were blessed with eleven grandchildren. From making giant appliance box forts in the backyard, to Bud’s iconic yellow pants, to attending countless school events and celebrations, Bud always made sure the grandchildren knew how much he loved them. We will always remember his advice to “Stay as sweet as you are” and keep his memory alive with the thirty-three great-grandchildren who also loved him so much. If we could have kept Bud with us forever, we all absolutely would have. We are comforted in knowing that he is finally reunited in Heaven with Ellen, Dave, Carla, and Pat even while our hearts are hurting here. His advice to everybody would be, “Spend a little, save a little, and give a little to the Church.”
Survivors include his daughter, Mary (Dave) Stevens of Dyersville, IA; son-in-law, Elmer Ries; daughters-in-law: Diane Domeyer and Jayne (Wayne) Meyer; eleven grandchildren: Shilo (Jeff) Westhoff, Shelly (Adam) Jelinek, Natalie (Jerry) Montgomery, Janelle Domeyer, Melissa (Tony) Kruse, Ashley (Kory) Manternach, Luke (Sara) Domeyer, Michelle (Jarrett) Harvey, Kelly (Wes) Kemerman, Kari (Curtis) Tessum, and Kyle (Holly) Domeyer; thirty-three great-grandchildren; siblings: Mary Lou Gravel, Doris Burlage, and Peter (Clarice) Domeyer; in-Laws: Rita Domeyer, Jack (Carol) Hogan, and Deanna Hogan.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ellen; children: Dave, Carla, and Pat; Domeyer brothers: Roland (Terese), Mickey (Marie), Daniel (Virginette), Jim (LaVon), Bill, Jack (Shirley), Donald, and Paul (Diane); and numerous in-laws.
The family would also like to thank the loving staff at Ellen Kennedy Living Center for becoming a second family to Bud during his years living there as well as the caring staff at Stonehill Health Center for supporting Bud in his final days.
