GARBER, IOWA
LaVern J. Haas, 91 of Garber, Iowa passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg, Iowa.
LaVern was born October 26, 1934, to Hubert and Anna (Drilling) Haas. He married Bernice (Koehn) Moser on May 20, 1967. They lived near Dubuque until they moved to the country by Garber in 1976. She passed away on October 24, 2019.
LaVern worked as a bricklayer, carpenter, and egg truck driver as well as serving in the army for two years. Following his service, he worked for 31 years at John Deere in Dubuque, Iowa. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Guttenberg and a member of the Plagman Barn in Garber serving as treasurer for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing along with woodworking, bird watching and playing Sheepshead at family gatherings.
Survivors include his daughter Ann (Mark) Payne of Elkader, and step-sons Lynn (Christina) Moser of Olin, Iowa and Stevon (Mary) Moser, granddaughter Alicia (Jeremy) Lenz, step-grandchildren Caleb (Jill) Moser, Sean (Ana) Moser, Charley Hicks, Naomi Smith, Scott (Kim) West, Todd Moser, George (Kate) Moser, a great granddaughter, step-great grandchildren and step-great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, step-daughter Maylo Maule, step-son and daughter-in-law Dee and Marilyn Moser, siblings Lucina (Dick) Morris, Anita (Alfred) Klosterman, Erwin Haas, Imelda (James) Boeckenstedt, Aletha (Edwin) Engelken, and step-granddaughter’s husband Scott Smith.
Visitation will be held 3:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 20, 2026, at Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg.
Visitation will continue Monday, September 21, 2026, from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Guttenberg. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo where military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post #723 and Iowa Honor Guard. Rev. Gabriel Anderson will officiate.
