James C. Johnston

GUTTENBERG, IOWA

James Carroll Johnston, 84, of Guttenberg, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on October 21, 2026.

Jim was born on June 18, 1942, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Howard A. Johnston and Mary Jane (Mackie) Johnston. In 1966, he married the girl next door, Lurline Yvette "Lee" DeArmond, of Thiensville, Wisconsin. They lived for many years in Grafton and Mequon, Wisconsin, before moving to Guttenberg, Iowa. They also spent their winters in North Palm Beach, Florida.

Jim's lifelong love of the Mississippi River began during childhood visits to relatives in Camanche and Clinton, Iowa. At just 14, he purchased his first boat with savings from his Milwaukee paper route and spent summers waterskiing on the river. He treasured that first boat so much that he carried its photograph in his wallet for the rest of his life.

In 2013, Jim returned to the river he had loved since childhood, lovingly restoring an 1850s home overlooking the Mississippi in Guttenberg.

Always curious and eager for a new adventure, Jim enjoyed a remarkable variety of interests and hobbies over the years, from fast sports cars, slot car racing, and snowmobiling to sports photography, stained glass, upholstery, playing the harmonica, and collecting antiques.

Jim is survived by his wife, Lee; son, Todd Johnston (Sandy) and grandson, Nick; daughter, Jennifer Johnston-Mehnert and grandchildren Darien, Kian, and Siana; brother, Thomas Johnston (Margarita); and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held at a later date.
