GARBER, IOWA
Hermie Ervin Schroeder, 86, of Garber, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Visitation will be held 3 – 8 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg, Iowa. Visitation will continue from 10 – 11 a.m. at St. John’s Congregational Church in Garber prior to funeral services.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at St. John’s Congregational Church with burial to follow at Mount Harmony Cemetery, in Garber. Rev. Pete Buschmann will officiate.
Hermie was born at home in Garber, Iowa, on August 28, 1939, son of Clarence and Irene (Handke) Schroeder. He married Janet Willie on September 15, 1961, and two sons were born to this union. They would raise their family on the home farm near Garber. He was a carpenter and ran the farm for several years before retiring.
He worked for Eddie Rodenberg, Wright Tree Services, Wilson Packing, Hilton Homes, Cael & Adams. He also worked with Dean Krieg and Lavern Lewin.
He found simple joy in watching a good Western film or show, especially Roy Rogers or John Wayne, and savoring a raisin-filled cookie. He took great pride in his Farmall MTA tractor and the work it represented. Above all, he treasured the time spent watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow, a source of lasting happiness and pride in his life.
He was a member of Plagman Barn Association, Elkport-Garber Community Club, Garber City Council, and St. John’s Congregational Church Council.
Survivors include his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Janet Schroeder; son, Danny (Nancy) Schroeder of Guttenberg; daughter-in-law, Ronda Schroeder of Greeley; grandchildren: Andy (Alicia) Schroeder, Jami (Nate) Dixon, Heidi (Rodney) Glawe, Amber (Wes) Schmitt, Christina Forsythe, Samantha (Brandon) Bailey, and Zach Ross; great-grandchildren, Shawn Jr., Malina, and Braxton Kuhse, Marissa, Landon, Brylie, and Ariella Glawe, Bradley, Henry, Grant, Oakley, and Zach Schroeder, Christianna, Amelia, Isabella, Jase Brenner, Skyler and Nixon Schmitt, Carter, Connor, Canton, and Collin Bailey, and Da’Karai Johnson; siblings: Denny Schroeder, Gary (Jennifer) Schroeder, Lyle (Hollis) Schroeder, Myrna Backes; brother-in-law, Ed Rodenberg; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
