Cindy L. Horstman

GUTTENBERG, IOWA

Cindy Lou Horstman passed away Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the Guttenberg Care Center, with her two sisters at her side. Cindy was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) approximately 10 months ago and was well-cared for and loved by the staff at the Care Center for the last couple of months of her life.

Cindy was born in Guttenberg on August 22, 1951, to Loraine (“Larry”) F. and Lela June Horstman. She joined two older sisters — Connie and Cathy — in growing up around Horstman’s Grill and “66” Station.

Cindy was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. She attended school at the Guttenberg Community Schools, graduating from the class of 1969. She lived most of her adult life in Cedar Rapids.

Cindy inherited her father’s artistic talent and enjoyed sharing her artwork with family and friends. Receiving a letter from Cindy was always special, because it often contained a recent drawing. When she wasn’t creating her own art, she enjoyed looking at the works of others at the Cedar Rapids Art Museum. She also enjoyed her frequent trips to the Cedar Rapids public library, as well as her “almost-daily” long phone chats with her sisters, who remained very close in heart to Cindy throughout her life.

Cindy is survived by her two sisters, Connie L. Horstman and Cathy A. Spicer; as well as Cathy’s life partner, Joe Hurson, all three live in Seattle, Washington.

Cindy was preceded in death by her grandparents, Wilbert and Ottilie Horstman and Lloyd and Lucy Nelson; her parents; her special friend, Peter Vasquez; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

We will remember Cindy for her great sense of humor, her “spunk,” and her perseverance. She was a very special person, who loved and was very dearly loved by her family and friends.

A celebration of Cindy’s life will be scheduled at a later date, as will a burial in the Guttenberg Municipal Cemetery. Cindy’s family wishes to express a special thank you to the caregivers at the Guttenberg Care Center, who took excellent care of Cindy in her last two months of life, and to the loving workers of St. Croix Hospice, who provided great support and caring to Cindy and her family over the past weeks.
