Alice Catherine (Mescher) Althoff, age 81, of Guttenberg, IA, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born the daughter of Henry and Matilda (Koopmann) Mescher, March 11, 1925, in New Vienna. Alice received her education from St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Dyersville, farmed and was a homemaker for many years. On February 12, 1947, she was united in marriage with Sylvester W. Althoff at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Dyersville. She enjoyed being surrounded by her family and friends and often said "the more the merrier". She loved playing rolls on her player piano and have her family and friends sing along. She was an active Church member and sang in the Church choir for many years. She was an avid Cubs fan and loved to play bingo. Alice was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Her friends and family will always cherish the memories they have of her. Alice is survived by 12 children: John (Thayis) Althoff of Luxemburg, Paul (special friend, Barb) Althoff of Minneapolis, MN, Dan (Betty) Althoff of Colesburg, Ruth (Marlin) Eivins of Macksburg, Iowa, Jean (John) Soat of East Dubuque, Illinois, David (Barb) Althoff of Edgewood, Mark (Chris) Althoff of Manassas, Virginia, Marvin (Robin) Althoff of Colesburg, Mary (Patrick) Hogan of Monticello, Iowa, Theresa (Dennis) Schmidt of Dyersville, Joe (Joyce) Althoff of Guttenberg, and Bill (Judi) Althoff of Edgewood; 33 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Armella Phillips of Cooperstown, New York and Rosemary Nelson of Salmon, Idaho; 6 brothers, Gilbert (Bernice) Mescher of Farley, Louis (Gisela) Mescher of Dyersville, Fritz (Jeanette) Mescher of Dyersville, Bob (LuAnn) Mescher of Strawberry Point, Dick (Jean) Mescher of Dyersville, and David (Jean) Mescher of Monticello; two brothers-in-law: Emil (Elsie) Althoff of Earlville and James Althoff of McGregor; and three sisters-in-law; Leona Althoff of Dyersville, Mildred (Ben) Zuercher of Garber, and Verna Mae Henkels of Garnavillo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Sylvester W. Althoff on May 15, 1989; a son-in-law, Keith Voss; a granddaughter, Jennifer Voss; two sisters, Marie Kramer and Viola Mescher; three brothers, Harold Mescher, Bill Mescher, and Clarence (C.J.)
