Robert was born in the state of Washington on November 24, 1925 to Marie and Russell Leeman. He received his education in the Lynwood, CA, schools and Compton, CA, college. He was a US Navy Veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, having served in both wars as a jet plane mechanic in the Asiatic Theatre. He married Frances (nee Peterson) on June 26, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, IA Robert retired after 30 years with John Deere where he was a Senior Engineering Analyst, traveling as a Deere consultant in the later years to several out of state facilities. Robert was an active community servant in Guttenberg, IA, and devoted many years to the improvement of veterans benefits. He served the City of Guttenberg many years, both as a councilman and as mayor. Also in service to the community, he was a 22 year member of the Guttenberg Fire Dept., a 20 year member of the Cemetery Board, a 10 year plus as president of the Guttenberg Hospital Board, a member of the county 911 board and the Clayton County Communications Board. He was instrumental in the provision of a flood control project for the community following the devastating flood of 1965, and in the building of the Guttenberg Veterans Memorial Monument, personally researching the nearly 1800 Guttenberg area veterans names engraved there thus far, from the Civil War to present time. In Trinity Lutheran church of Guttenberg he served several times as President, each time taking on large improvement projects, and as a long-time trustee. Bob was an active LIFE member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign wars, a member of the AM Vets, and the 40/8. In the Legion he served all post and county offices and was a 4th District Commander and a Dept. of Iowa Vice-Commander. He served the Dept. Of Iowa Legion (as well as the Fourth District) 13 years as the State Chairman of Rehabilitation and Veterans Affairs until his resignation to that position. In Clayton County, he was the Chairman of Veterans Affairs Commission for 20 years, serving further by governors appointment on the State of Iowa Governors Iowa Commission of Veterans Affairs for several years, where he was chairman of the Commission at one time. Several times he chaired the 3 day semi-annual Commissioner training Schools, sponsored by the IVCA, held for the county commissioners of the 99 Iowa counties. He resigned that appointment after several a years of service to the Commission. He was also recognized by the National Director of Veterans Affairs for his participation in the 21st Century Veterans Fair, which was the catalyst for setting up veteran medical satellite clinics through the various states so veterans did not always have to travel great distances to medical hospitals. This project he then promoted in his home state of Iowa. Robert is survived by his wife of 65 years, two sons, Jeffery Michael (Shari), of Sedalia, MO, and Dr. Jay Paul (Debra) of Guttenberg, six grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn (Ryan) Kirkruff, Ryan Michael Leeman, Jonathan Jay (Julie) Leeman, Melissa Marie (Kiel) Head, Anna Elizabeth Leeman, Christopher Jay Leeman, and 6 great grandchildren.
