Lois Backes, 94, of Guttenberg, Iowa, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2012 surrounded by family. She was born on August 7, 1918, at the family farm in Garber, the daughter of John and Martha (Hansel) Kulper. Lois married Ernest Carl Backes and to that union a daughter, Barbara was born. Lois was a lifetime member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. She worked at the American Pearl Button Factory for many years and later worked for two different electronics companies. She was always sharing homemade cookies and liked being outdoors feeding the humming birds, rabbits and squirrels that frequented her yard. She enjoyed biking and walking and went on Ragbrai three times starting when she was 65 year old on team "Guttenberg Grandmas". Crafts and quilting occupied a lot of her time, with potholders and afghans being her specialty. In the early years she sold her crafts at the McGregor Art Show and later in life donated the items she made to the Guttenberg Hospital. Survivors include her daughter Barbara (John) Drahos and granddaughter Christina (John Matt) Drahos all of Postville, and sister-in-laws Liz and Betty Kulper of Garber. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Joyce Jaster, Dorothy Bush, and Luva Clefisch, and two brothers Lyle and Lowell Kulper. Lois had requested no flowers and that any memorials be made to St. Pauls Lutheran Church or the Guttenberg Hospital.Memorial Service: Friday 10:00 A.M.
