James Perrin Hankes, age 89, of Colesburg, IA, died Monday, August 16, 2010, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. He was born the son of John and Elizabeth (Pierce) Hankes on September 14, 1920 in Dubuque IA. After receiving his education, James worked as a laborer until he entered the U.S. Army on October 3, 1942. James was involved in several battles including; Sicilian Naples, Foggia Rome, Arno Southern France, Rhineland Central Europe Campaigns. For these campaigns, James was awarded 8 Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. He was given an Honorable discharge on September 24, 1945. Almost 3 years later he was united in marriage with Arletta Welsh in Dubuque Iowa. Six children were born to this union. James was a member of the Amvets and enjoyed woodworking. He had a great love for his family and cherished each get together they had. James will be forever loved and cherished by his wife of 62 years, Arletta Hankes; children; James (Jane Thein) Hankes Jr. of Millville, Roxy (Leonard) Knockel of Colesburg, Julie (Jim) Trappe of Luana, Brenda (Dennis) Fassbinder of Guttenberg, Mark (Dawn) Hankes of Kansas City, Mo. and Lisa (Tom) Weddel of Highland Ranch, Colo.;17 grandchildren, 15great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Elsie Gull, Josephine Anderegg and Florence Heer; two brothers, Charles and his twin brother John. In lieu of flowers and all kinds of gifts, all memorials may be sent to the family of James Hankes. Visitation: Wednesday 4:00 - 8:00 P.M.
