On July 25, 2010, Don Evers was surrounded by his wife of 57 years and many family members when he was called to his heavenly home. Don was born in Dyersville, IA on October 17, 1932 to Gilbert & Inda (Lasche) Evers. He graduated from Xavier High School in Dyersville. He then attended Bayless College in Dubuque. On October 24, 1953, Don married Betty Nieland at St. Marys Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Don was serving in the Army and left for Korea in November, 1953. He returned from duty in April 1955. On July 1, 1955 Don and Betty started their life in the retail world by purchasing a grocery store from Paul Meier (presently Connies Apparel). In 1958 he purchased the Bill Kann building planning to move his grocery store into that building. In the meantime the Thompson building became empty (presently Riverview Restaurant) and the food store moved across the street. Shortly after that the Kann building was vacated and Don hired Doug Gueder and together they started Dougs Steak House. In 1967 Doug purchased the building from Don and the "Evers" family moved to their present home in Miners Creek. In the 60s, Don purchased the Odd Fellow building which housed the Post Office and movie theatre. At that time, he put a bowling alley on the second level of the building. Even though Don spent many hours building his businesses, he found time to enjoy the bowling alley as his many trophies would be proof of. When the post office and theatre vacated, Don and Betty opened Skogmos Variety Store which later became the 1st Ben Franklin Store of their chain of 9 stores. Don and Betty moved their grocery store to the highway in 1978. They sold the store in 1980. Although all the boys worked their share of hours at the grocery stores, none of them had an interest in the food business. Because of all the entrepreneurial teaching by Don to his 7 sons, they all own their own businesses today and their only daughter Beth is a Nurse Practitioner here in Guttenberg. Don and Betty sold their 9 Ben Franklin Stores in 1995 at which time Don went back to college at NICC and received a degree in Accounting. He started his own investment company which he built until his death. Don was a founder in the Guttenberg Country Club and for many years was an avid golfer. He was also an active ember of St. Marys Catholic Church where he served as an usher and trustee. He was also a member of the American Legion, Eagles Club, Knights of Columbus, Chamber of Commerce and Retail Committee. In Dons spare time he and Betty thoroughly enjoyed playing cards with many of their friends in the community. Don always looked forward to holidays and family gatherings as his kids and grandchildren meant the world to him. Don is survived in death by his wife Betty, 7 sons, Jay (Debe) of Manchester, Jeff (Linda) of Dewitt, Steve (friend Diana) of Dyersville, Mark (Kellie) of Hudson, Gilbert (Jean) of Carroll, Dean (Toni) of Kimberly, WI, and Chris (Kim), of Cedar Rapids1 daughter, Beth (Matt) Sadewasser of Guttenberg, 12 grandsons, 10 granddaughters, 2 great-grandsons, 2 great-granddaughters, 2 sister-in-laws, 1 brother-in-law, 2 nieces and 5 nephews.
